Starr Farm...Our Family Farm ~ 109 years, 5 generations, & still growing !
Sweetgrass Joinery is located on Starr Farm, a small diverse family farm located in Claridon Township, Geauga County, Ohio. The farm was purchased in the autumn of 1903 by Elwin and Faye Starr. The farm was primarily a dairy and had a small milking herd of registered Guernsey cows. During the Great Depression, Elwin's only son, Hubert, and his wife Ruth, took over operations. Hubert & Ruth transformed the farm from a dairy to an egg farm. They converted the threshing barn into a chicken barn for their flocks of Leghorn hens. As Hubert and Ruth's family grew, they began to diversify into fresh market vegetables and Christmas trees, eventually phasing out the eggs. In 1970 or so, Huberts third son, Donald, and his wife Judy, took over and further diversified with the addition of greenhouses for bedding plant propogation. They also added a three acre apple orchard and small vineyard. The farm currently occupies about 130 acres. 40 acres remains in mixed hardwood farm woodlot. Today, the farm is a family effort, involving some of Don & Judy's children, as well as grandchildren.
