historically inspired, hand-crafted timber-frames

a common site in the country-side of Northeast Ohio, we've designed and crafted more frameworks for sugarhouses than other any other type of building....and we look forward to many more.

Sugarbush Lodge
c. 2004
Framed in eastern hemlock, this project is comprised of two raking-strut trusses and common purlins erected over conventionally framed walls and gables. The new room serves as a heated addition to an existing pole-framed sugarhouse. Inspired by traditional English framing.

Tree Farm Sugarhouse
c.2005
Framed in yellow-poplar, cherry, white oak, & sassafras, the majority of this timber was harvested from the owner's farm woodlot/sugarbush. Inspiration for this frame is a bit of a hodge-podge...including 19th century Pennsylvania bank barns to medieval England.

Little Mountain Sugarhouse
c. 2009

Our third sugarhouse, this framework is joined almost entirely in eastern hemlock, with the exception of  a pair of  black cherry raking struts rising from the mid cross-frame tie-beam.  The main frame measures 14'0 x 18'0, and the gabled porch approximately 8'0 x 12'0.  A new 2'0 x 6'0  wood-fired Leader Evaporator will grace the interior and will be boiling away this upcoming sugar season.

This is our first framework in Lake County, Ohio.  The frame pattern is influenced by 19th century English -American timber-framing. The frame was raised as the autumn leaves fell in late October by a gathering of family and friends.

"maple sugar timber house"

This is our fourth sugarhouse, and our smallest to date at 12' x 12'.  The timberframework is joined in a mixture of both hardwood and softwood.  Black cherry, white ash, yellow-poplar, eastern hemlock, eastern white pine, and Norway spruce all combine to give this little framework a real "homespun" look.  At 144 square feet, the sugarhouse can easily accommodate a 2' x 4' evaporator and still have room to move about, stoke the fire, and visit with family and friends.

The framework was raised on a bright sunny winter's afternoon in late January. Two sisters, ages 11 and 13, did most of the raising and pegging of this framework. The sugarhouse was up and running by mid February, just in time for the first run of sap.

Our fifth sugarhouse, this 14'0 x 20'0  framework is joined entirely in mixed oak.  The frame pattern is influenced by 19th century American timber-framing.  A portion of the rafters were "headed" to accommodate the opening in the roof for the sugarhouse "cupola".  The frame was raised by hand in late summer by a gathering of family and friends.
